· Who Will Stay by Our Side to the End? Five News Stories in Faith

A Christian look at five October news stories: a children's ER, the Hong Kong fire, Google's data center, Guryong Village, and Choi Bul-am.

Who Will Stay by Our Side to the End? Five News Stories in Faith
Over yesterday and today, I gathered and read 773 articles from nine news outlets in Korea and abroad. From them I chose five scenes, and I'd like to look at them with you through the mind of Christ.
Today's Thread: Who Will Stay by Our Side to the End?
When I lay today's headlines side by side, one question keeps showing through: "Who will stay by our side to the end?"
In Suwon, the pediatric emergency specialists who sat up through the night with sick children have said they intend to leave. In Hong Kong, eleven months after a fire that killed 168 people, the city's chief executive finally bowed his head before the bereaved families. In Finland, a forest was cut down before the assessment required by law was finished. In a shantytown in the middle of Gangnam, Seoul, 127 neighbors lost their homes in a single night. And a boy who lost his father early in life lived as "the nation's father," and has now passed away.
We all long for someone to stay beside us, especially when we are sick, when we have been wronged, when we have lost our home. Today's five scenes are windows that ask whose side we are standing beside, and who stays beside us to the very end.
Window One: When the Hands That Guarded Children Begin to Tremble
The Facts
- Seven of the nine specialists at the Pediatric Emergency Medical Center of Ajou University Hospital have told the hospital they intend to resign.
- While investigating the death of an infant who had been treated at the hospital, police raided the center on September 30, while it was in the middle of seeing patients.
- At the National Assembly's annual audit on the 27th, the police witness was asked to apologize but went no further than calling the situation "regrettable." Physicians' groups are demanding an apology from the police.
- Some of the medical staff have reportedly said their hands shake so much that it is hard to treat patients.
What the World Says
One side says, "The doctors are applying collective pressure." The other says, "The police have wrecked the front lines of medicine." While each picks a side and blames the other, two groups at the very center of this story drop out of sight: the parents who lost their child, and the children who will knock on the emergency room door again tonight.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
First, I bow my head before the grief of the parents who lost their child. It is right for them to want the truth, and an investigation is the system meant to answer that question. At the same time, if the people who work where life and death are decided start trembling with fear, the cost will fall on the smallest patients in the end. The authority that uncovers truth and the authority that saves lives must stand together, without tearing each other down.
Poythress diagnoses an age wounded by authority this way:
"Those with power have trampled on those under them. … We must respond by finding ways to exercise authority well, driving out bad authority." (Vern S. Poythress, Redeeming Sociology, 2011, p. 50, re-translated from the Korean)
This is not a call to do away with authority. It is a call for authority to return to its place as service. And in this conflict, the ones God looks at first are the children.
"Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish." (Matthew 18:14, WEB)
Today's Question: Is the authority entrusted to me (as a parent, a manager at work, an officer in the church) being used right now to give people life, or to make them shrink back?
Window Two: A Head Bowed After Eleven Months
The Facts
- On November 26 last year, fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court, a housing estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong. Seven of its eight blocks were engulfed, and 168 people died.
- The report of the independent commission of inquiry, released on the 29th, found that the renovation contractors bore primary responsibility, while four government bodies also shared part of the blame.
- Chief Executive John Lee, together with senior officials, bowed and apologized to the victims and the public, eleven months after the disaster.
- Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho resigned, the first senior official to step down over the disaster.
What the World Says
The world calculates apologies. Too late, it says; not nearly enough; or a performance staged after weighing political gains and losses. There is some truth in that. The people who were lost will not come back because of an apology.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Even so, admitting that a wrong is a wrong is the first door on the road to restoration. Scripture says that the path of those who hide and the path of those who bring things into the light are different.
"He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy." (Proverbs 28:13, WEB)
This word is not only for Hong Kong's officials. We, too, take a long time to admit our wrongs. Because of saving face, because we fear the responsibility, because we wait for the other person to apologize first, we let time slip away. Meanwhile, the one who was hurt is left alone. Christ bore not his own sins but ours, and took responsibility in our place on the cross. Those who know that grace can say "It was my fault" before it is too late. And an apology must not stop at words; it has to go on to setting things right.
Today's Question: Is there an apology you have been putting off? Before eleven months go by, could you say it first today, in a single sentence?
Window Three: The Forest Cut Before the Assessment
The Facts
- On the 29th (local time), Finnish police opened a criminal investigation into suspected environmental law violations at the site of a Google data center in Muhos, in northern Finland.
- Google's Finnish subsidiary is suspected of clearing forest and draining water on the site before completing the environmental impact assessment required by law.
- The project is part of Google's largest AI infrastructure investment in Europe.
- Regulators ordered the site preparation work to stop earlier this month. Google's position is that it carried out the preparatory work according to its understanding of the law at the time.
What the World Says
The AI race is a race of speed. Land in northern Europe, where the cool climate cuts cooling costs, looks to companies like an opportunity they cannot afford to miss. The calculation "build first, sort it out later" follows naturally.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Technology is a gift that flows from the gift of dominion God entrusted to human beings. We cannot call a data center evil in itself. The problem is the order of things. When cutting comes before asking and examining, creation stops being something to care for and becomes an obstacle to clear away.
Man "is not free to exploit endlessly and arbitrarily the things placed under him. He is a steward who must ultimately answer to God for how he has used the gifts and privileges God has given him." (Vern S. Poythress, Redeeming Science, 2006, p. 150, re-translated from the Korean)
When God entrusted the garden to the first man, he gave him two tasks.
"Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it." (Genesis 2:15, WEB)
Cultivating and keeping go together. Someone has to stay beside the fast machines, and beside the silent forest too.
Today's Question: What is quietly disappearing behind the conveniences I use every day? This week, could you change even one habit toward "keeping"?
Window Four: 127 People Who Lost Their Homes in the Heart of Gangnam
The Facts
- On the afternoon of the 27th, a major fire broke out in Guryong Village in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul. It took 13 hours to put out.
- 127 residents lost their homes and moved into temporary shelters.
- Guryong Village is a cluster of shacks slated for redevelopment. Of its 1,107 households, 938 have already relocated and 169 remain.
What the World Says
When a fire breaks out, people first talk about land prices and redevelopment schedules. You even hear, "That neighborhood was going to be torn down anyway." The fact that shacks stand right next to a forest of glittering apartment towers becomes visible only briefly, when it makes the news, and then fades again.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Losing a home is not just losing a roof. It means losing your belongings, your memories, and even the place where you plan for tomorrow, all at once. Abraham Kuyper explained the help the church gives to its poor neighbors like this:
"What we entrust [to the deacons] we simply give back to Christ as stewards of his possessions, and it is to be distributed in his name to his poor, who are our brothers and sisters." (Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: Six Stone-lectures, 1899, p. 83, re-translated from the Korean)
Kuyper calls the poor "his poor," that is, our brothers and sisters. Helping is not a place where the helper is lifted up. It is a place where we return what belongs to Christ to Christ's own people.
"The King will answer them, 'Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'" (Matthew 25:40, WEB)
The Lord calls a person from that burned village "my brother." He is right there beside them.
Today's Question: Who in our neighborhood will spend the coldest winter? Does our church know that neighbor's name?
Window Five: "The Nation's Father," Who Had His Own Father for Only a Short Time
The Facts
- Actor Choi Bul-am, called "the nation's father" for playing Chief Park in the TV drama Chief Inspector and Chairman Kim of Yangchon-ri in Country Diaries, passed away on the night of the 29th.
- When he was a child, his father died of overwork at the age of thirty-five.
- In 1981 he acted in a Country Diaries storyline in which his character takes in an orphan named Geumdong-i. That role led him to the Korea Children's Foundation (now ChildFund Korea, known as Green Umbrella), and for more than 40 years he stood beside children as chairman of its supporters' association.
- From 2011, he hosted the program Korean Dinner Table for 14 years.
What the World Says
The world sends him off with the words, "An era has come to an end." That is true. But the question he left behind is too large to keep only as a memory.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
A boy who lost his father's embrace early took on the role of father to a whole nation. And he did not stop at the scene where he took in an orphan on screen; he stood beside real children for more than 40 years. The acting became his life. Here was a person who gave others what he himself never received. In him we see traces of the image God has engraved in human beings.
Scripture introduces God like this:
"A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation." (Psalm 68:5, WEB)
"Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." (James 1:27, WEB)
Even if we lost our fathers early, we have God, the Father of the fatherless. Those who know this Father can become a father, or a mother, to someone else.
Today's Question: Is there a child or young adult around me who needs a grown-up in their life? Could you treat them to a meal sometime this month?
Closing: The One Who Never Leaves
Let me lay the five scenes on top of one another once more.
There were doctors whose hands, after guarding children, trembled so much that they are ready to leave, and officials who bowed their heads before the bereaved only after eleven months. There was a forest cut down before the assessment was even finished, and neighbors who lost their homes in a single night. And there was a man who lost his father early yet stood beside other people's children for more than 40 years.
People sometimes stay, and sometimes leave. They leave because they are afraid, because they are worn out, because they are busy, because the numbers don't add up. We are the same. But there is One who appeared in none of today's headlines and who never leaves. He saw the crowds like sheep without a shepherd and was moved with compassion for them (Matthew 9:36), and he carried the cross so that he could stay by our side to the very end.
"I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5, WEB)
"Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20, WEB)
Because he is beside me, we too find the strength to stay beside someone else. As I close today's post, I hope you will take a small checklist with you.
- □ Did I use the authority entrusted to me today to move toward giving life to at least one person?
- □ Did I offer today the apology I have been putting off?
- □ This week, did I pray by name for one of the "little ones" near me (a sick child, a neighbor who lost their home, a young person who needs a grown-up) and reach out to them at least once?
In family worship or in a small group, try sharing this one question together: "Who stayed by my side to the end recently, and whose side can I stay beside this week?"
The next time you watch the news, ask yourself: Is this story trying to make me turn away from someone, or to stand beside someone? And remember: there is One who never leaves our side.
