A pastor reads five news stories through the Gospel: Seoul's Guryong Village fire, GDP growth, Harry Kane, AI layoffs and a dinosaur auction.

(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 153쪽, 필자 번역)

Who Decides What a Person Is Worth? Five News Stories in Christ's Light

Over yesterday and today I gathered and read 781 articles from nine news outlets in Korea and abroad. I have picked five scenes from them, and we will look at them together with the mind of Christ.

Today's Thread: Who Decides What a Person Is Worth?

Today's headlines were full of numbers. When I set those numbers side by side, one question came to mind. "Who decides what a person is worth?"

A shantytown burned through the night in one corner of Seoul's most expensive neighborhood. The national economy grew much more than expected, yet shoppers kept their wallets shut in the small shops on the side streets. A boy who was once told he "had no future" and was let go by his team was named the best football player in the world. A big American tech company announced it would pour 126 trillion won into AI, while another offered early retirement to 60,000 employees. In a New York auction house, a single dinosaur skeleton sold for $47.3 million.

The world never stops putting prices on things. It prices land, growth rates, goals, efficiency, even a set of bones. So where is the worth of a person decided? Today's five scenes are windows that bring us face to face with that question.

Window One: Next to the Most Expensive Land, the First Homes to Burn

The Facts

  • Around 3:50 p.m. on the 27th, a fire broke out in Guryong Village in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul. Driven by strong winds, it spread across several sections of the village, and a shortage of firefighting water nearby made it hard to put out. The fire was fully extinguished around 4:39 a.m. on the 28th, about 12 hours and 50 minutes later.
  • Apart from a woman in her thirties who suffered a minor leg injury, no casualties have been confirmed. In the sections where the fire spread most, 107 residents lost their homes, and Gangnam District set up temporary shelter in a nearby school gymnasium and hotels.
  • Guryong Village is an unlicensed shantytown formed in the 1970s and 1980s by people who were evicted when Gangnam was developed. Its houses are packed tightly together and built from highly flammable materials such as plastic sheeting and plywood.
  • This village also had a fire on January 16 of this year, when 258 residents were evacuated.

What the World Says

When news like this breaks, people quickly move on to talk of redevelopment: what the land is worth, how compensation will work, who will profit. Meanwhile, the people who twice this year escaped a fire with nothing but the clothes they wore are left as "a problem that will be sorted out someday."

What the Gospel Lets Us See

The people of this village are not a problem to be sorted out. They are our neighbors. In his 1898 lectures at Princeton, Abraham Kuyper said that Calvinism opposed not only slavery and caste systems but also the hidden oppression of the poor, and he added this:

It did not rest until, politically and socially, "every man, simply because he is man, should be recognized, respected and dealt with as a creature created after the Divine likeness." (Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: Six Stone-lectures, 1899, p. 27, rendered from my Korean translation)

A person's worth is not set by what their house is worth. It is already settled by one fact: they bear the image of God. And our Lord Himself took a place among the homeless on this earth.

"Jesus said to him, 'The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'" (Matthew 8:20, WEB)

If the church follows the One who had nowhere to lay His head, then tonight it should think first of the people who have lost a place to lay theirs. The first cold snap of the season arrived this week. It would be good to look around our own neighborhoods for neighbors spending the winter in shacks, tiny single-room flats, or plastic greenhouses.

Today's Question: Within a ten-minute walk of our church, who will spend this winter in the most cold?

Window Two: The Numbers Grew, but the Neighborhood Wallets Stayed Shut

The Facts

  • On the 27th, the Bank of Korea announced that real gross domestic product (GDP) grew 1.0% in the third quarter of this year compared with the previous quarter. Semiconductor exports and related investment in equipment drove the growth, which beat the forecast the central bank had issued in August.
  • Over the same period, private consumption fell 0.2% from the previous quarter. This is the first drop in private consumption in three years and nine months.
  • According to the Financial Supervisory Service, the delinquency rate on loans to sole proprietors at domestic banks was 0.86% at the end of August, up 0.09 percentage points from a month earlier.

What the World Says

The news calls it a "surprise growth." That is true. But the number does not tell us how everyone is doing. Even as the growth rate climbs, there are shops waiting for customers, and owners losing sleep over interest payments. The average may rise, but the people below the average stay out of sight.

What the Gospel Lets Us See

Growth is a good gift. The ability to work, make, and sell comes from God, and a nation's finances becoming more ample is something to be thankful for. But people are not automatically cared for just because the numbers get bigger. The Bible does not tell us to average out our burdens. It tells us to carry them together.

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2, WEB)

The church does not set economic policy. Still, it can become a regular customer. Holding a meeting at the restaurant in front of the church or buying snacks from the neighborhood bakery may look small, but it can help a shop get through a week. If you have a neighbor quietly struggling under debt, you can pass along the number of the Korea Inclusive Finance Agency's call center (dial 1397 with no area code). It is a single place where people can get counseling on both loans and debt restructuring.

Today's Question: Which neighborhood shop can I become a regular at this week?

Window Three: The Boy Who Was Let Go Lifts the Golden Ball

The Facts

  • England captain Harry Kane (33, Bayern Munich) was named the men's winner at the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, held at the London Palladium theatre in the United Kingdom (on the 26th, local time). He is the first English player to win it in 25 years, since Michael Owen in 2001.
  • In the 2025–2026 season, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 games for club and country combined.
  • As a child he was released from Arsenal's youth academy, and even after turning professional at Tottenham he was sent out on loan to four lower-league clubs.
  • In his acceptance speech, he expressed deep gratitude to his wife.

What the World Says

The world reads this as a success story: "In the end, he proved himself with his skill." It is a pleasant story to hear. It says that those who are rejected must work harder until one day they prove their worth for all to see. But behind it lies a frightening assumption: if you cannot prove it, you have no worth.

What the Gospel Lets Us See

Kane's diligence deserves praise. He did not bury the talent he was given but kept sharpening it to the end, and that pleases God. But there is something we must remember. Most children who are let go never win a Ballon d'Or. Their worth is not less than Kane's.

The Bible has a deeper story of rejection.

"The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is Yahweh's doing. It is marvelous in our eyes." (Psalm 118:22–23, WEB)

The New Testament tells us that this rejected stone is Christ (Matthew 21:42, WEB). The One people threw away as useless, God set up as the cornerstone. So a Christian's worth is not a prize earned by proving oneself later. It is a gift already received, because we have been united with the One who was rejected. Those who know this do not collapse in the face of failure, and they do not grow proud in the face of success.

Today's Question: Is there a child or young person near me who has been told they "have no future"? Before telling them to prove themselves, could I first tell them, "You are precious"?

Window Four: 126 Trillion Won for Machines, Early Retirement Offers for People

The Facts

  • On the 26th (local time), Meta announced a plan to raise $95 billion (about 126 trillion won) in new capital to fund AI data centers and computing infrastructure. The next day it raised the amount to $97.5 billion.
  • Meta's free cash flow for the third quarter was negative by more than $2.1 billion. Its spending on AI has grown larger than the cash it brings in.
  • On the same day, Microsoft was reported to have offered voluntary retirement to 60,000 of its roughly 223,000 employees. The move is seen as a cost-cutting measure for the AI era.

What the World Says

The market calls this an "ammunition war." To win, you have to pour money into machines, and to raise that money, you have to cut what you spend on people. In this calculation, a person becomes one more line item in the costs.

What the Gospel Lets Us See

Technology itself is good. It can be a tool that lightens human labor and lets us serve more neighbors. The problem comes when the tool and the person trade places. Over a hundred years ago, Machen wrote this:

Christianity "firmly refuses to make the individual a mere means to an end, a mere element in society." (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 153, rendered from my Korean translation)

We cannot say that a company adjusting its workforce is a sin in itself. But a world where the sentence "We are cutting people for the sake of machines" sounds perfectly ordinary is a world we need to discern. Jesus pointed to sparrows sold for next to nothing in the market and said:

"Aren't two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father's will, but the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows." (Matthew 10:29–31, WEB)

If you have been called "replaceable" at work, know that God is counting even the hairs on your head. And if you are a Christian in a position of hiring and managing people, take one more look at the faces behind the numbers before you decide on them.

Today's Question: At work, do I see my coworkers as "costs" or as "neighbors"?

Window Five: $47.3 Million for One Skeleton

The Facts

  • The skeleton of a Nanotyrannus, a dinosaur long mistaken for a juvenile Tyrannosaurus before being recognized as a separate genus, sold for $47.3 million at Sotheby's in New York (on the 27th, local time). That is more than five times the top of its estimated price.
  • The skeleton was found by a rancher on his own land in Montana and is called "Jodi" after him. It is one of three Nanotyrannus skeletons known to science, and its price is the second highest ever paid for a dinosaur fossil at auction.
  • The buyer was not disclosed. In the scientific community, the sale has renewed debate over dinosaur fossils being sold to private owners and moving out of reach of research and public display.

What the World Says

The world says, "It is rare, so it is expensive." If the price goes up, the thing must be precious, and whoever bids the highest deserves to own it.

What the Gospel Lets Us See

A single animal that lived 67 million years ago can still amaze us this much today. It is a truly wondrous thing. Poythress, while studying science, confessed:

"Science opens a marvelous window onto the wisdom of God. Science shows the glory of God as incomparably beautiful, wise, and deep." (Vern S. Poythress, Redeeming Science, 2006, p. 159, rendered from my Korean translation)

The real worth of these bones is not in the auction price. It is in being a window that shows the wisdom of the One who made them. If that window disappears into one person's living room, then God's handiwork that many people could have looked at together is hidden that much more. Creation belongs to its Maker before it belongs to whoever paid for it.

"Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches." (Psalm 104:24, WEB)

Going to a museum with your children, or stopping on a neighborhood walk to look closely at a single stone or leaf, costs nothing. Yet it can become a place of worship more precious than any auction house in the world.

Today's Question: Do I treasure only what has a price tag, while walking right past God's handiwork that is given freely?

Closing: The One Who Paid the Price

Let me lay the five scenes over one another once more.

Beside the most expensive land, a shantytown was the first to burn. Beneath the growing numbers, the neighborhood wallets stayed shut. A boy who was let go as a child lifted the golden ball, and a company pouring tens of trillions of won into machines offered retirement to 60,000 people. A single skeleton was priced at $47.3 million.

The world sets prices by land value, by revenue, by goals scored, by efficiency, by auction bids. On that scale we are always anxious, because even if our value went up today, it could fall tomorrow. But the Bible says our worth has already been settled on a different scale.

"knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18–19, WEB)

The grandmother living in a shack, the shop owner waiting for customers, the child who was let go, the employee who received a retirement offer: all were bought at the same price. That price is not silver or gold but Christ Himself. That is why a Christian treats no one as cheap, and does not sell themselves cheap either.

This week, I hope you will try these things:

  1. Find one neighbor near your church or home who will spend this winter in the cold, and pray for them by name.
  2. Become a regular at one neighborhood shop, and if a neighbor is struggling with debt, pass along the 1397 call center number.
  3. At work or at home, say "You are precious" to someone who is judged only by how "useful" they are.

As you close today's news, I hope you will hold on to this one question: Who decides what a person is worth? The One who paid for us with His own blood has already decided. That worth will never fall again.
