· What Is One Person Worth? Five News Stories Seen with Christ's Heart

A pastor reads five news stories, from a missing person alert to a stock crash, and asks what God says a human life is worth.
(Abraham Kuyper, Souvereiniteit in eigen kring, 1880, 35쪽, 필자 번역)
(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 153쪽, 필자 번역)
(Herman Bavinck, The Philosophy of Revelation, 1909, 257쪽, 필자 번역)

What Is One Person Worth? Five News Stories Seen with Christ's Heart
Over yesterday and today, I gathered and read 722 articles from nine news outlets in Korea and abroad. From them I chose five scenes, and I'd like us to look at them together with the heart of Christ.
Today's Thread: What Is One Person Worth?
When I lined up this Lord's Day's headlines side by side, one question came to mind: "What is one person worth, and who decides?"
In Daegu, a citizen remembered a missing person alert on their phone and helped bring a lost man back to his family. In early medical school admissions, 1,728 students were accepted but never enrolled. One in ten adults said they had used a weight-loss drug in the past year. On our stock market, the ten largest business groups lost 1,100 trillion won in market value in less than a month. And from a city in Ukraine came word that a way for aid is finally opening for elderly residents who had been surviving on weeds.
The world measures a person's worth by test scores, body weight, and stock prices. God uses a different scale. Today's five scenes are windows for comparing those two scales.
Window One. The Person Who Didn't Swipe Away the Missing Person Alert
The Facts
- On the 22nd, a citizen out for a walk near Seodaegu-ro in Seo-gu, Daegu, noticed a man wearing a yellow vest printed with the name of a nursing hospital.
- When the citizen reopened a missing person alert still on their phone, the man looked like the person in the message: a man in his fifties with dementia.
- The citizen took his photo, sent it to the police, and stayed on the phone with them, and the missing man was safely returned to his family. The story became known through a social media post the citizen wrote on the 23rd.
- In the post, the citizen also pointed out that you can see a missing person's photo and description through the link in the alert or on the National Police Agency's "Safe Dream" website.
What the World Says
When a missing person alert goes off, most of us mute it and swipe it away. It's just one of several notifications a day, and we assume it has nothing to do with us.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
This citizen said that at first they, too, just glanced at the alert and moved on. But the face stayed somewhere in their heart. Because of that small memory, a man went home. A family's anxious waiting came to an end.
Jesus told of a shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to go looking for the one lost sheep, and then He concluded:
"Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish." (Matthew 18:14, WEB)
On God's scale, a lost person is not a line in a statistic. He is a child the Father is searching for. Someone who carries that heart doesn't let even a single notification slip by. You don't have to be a great hero. Spending ten seconds looking at a photo can be the first step of loving your neighbor.
Today's Question: The next time a missing person alert arrives, before you dismiss it, will you tap the link, look at the face once, and pray a short prayer?
Window Two. 1,728 Students Accepted but Not Enrolled
The Facts
- According to an analysis of universities' public disclosures by Jongro Academy, a college-prep institute, 1,728 accepted students gave up enrollment in the 2026 early admissions round at 39 medical schools nationwide (1,812 places). That is 95.4% of the places offered.
- Most are believed to have been accepted at more than one medical school and moved to another. In the end, 50 places at 11 universities went unfilled and were carried over to the regular admissions round. At Seoul National University's medical school, no one gave up enrollment.
- Forecasts say that in the 2027 school year, the introduction of a regional doctor program (places reserved for students who will serve in underserved regions) will raise enrollment quotas and make this chain of moves even bigger.
What the World Says
The world reads these numbers as "smart choices to trade up to a better medical school." When a child is born, parents are already asking, "Could this one get into med school?" And even within medical schools, a ranking forms again. The chain from regional schools to the capital area, and from the Gyeonggi-Incheon area to Seoul, grows longer every year.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Let me say this first: the dream of becoming a doctor is precious. Caring for sick neighbors is a calling that pleases God. Nor should we blame students and parents for seeking a better environment. But we need to ask whether one assumption has sunk deep into our society: that jobs come in higher and lower ranks, and a person's worth is set by the position they hold.
When Abraham Kuyper opened the Free University in 1880, he said:
"There is not a single inch in the whole domain of our human life of which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, 'Mine!'" (Abraham Kuyper, Souvereiniteit in eigen kring, 1880, p. 35, my translation)
Hospitals aren't the only ground that belongs to Christ. Classrooms, factories, farms, and kitchens are His ground too. Paul said this about the members of the body:
"But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired." (1 Corinthians 12:18, WEB)
There is a question to ask our children before "Which university?" It is this: "With the gifts God has given you, whom do you want to serve?" Each place someone gave up brought someone else the joy of a late acceptance. In the same way, when we step down one rung on the ladder of rank, we may see a way to serve someone right where we stand.
Today's Question: Do I tell my children or younger colleagues, "Climb as high as you can," or do I tell them, "Find someone to serve"?
Window Three. A Generation Weighing Injections in Front of the Mirror
The Facts
- According to the "2026 Korea Wellness Report" released on the 25th by the KB Financial Group Management Research Institute (a survey of 2,000 people aged 25 to 69), 10.3% of respondents had been prescribed or had used GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy or Mounjaro in the past year. The rate was highest among Gen Z, at 16.5%.
- 33.9% said they intend to use them in the future. As their main reason, Gen Z most often chose "managing appearance and body shape" (48.2%), while baby boomers most often chose "improving health" (55.3%).
- 57.3% of respondents worried about side effects, and 49.9% said that in the past month they had felt fatigue that didn't go away even after enough rest.
What the World Says
The world says, "Your body's value goes up as much as you manage it." Comparing ourselves with the bodies on our screens, we give ourselves a score. If a drug can raise that score quickly, we see no reason to say no.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Medicine is the fruit of wisdom God has given. For people suffering from obesity, a drug used under a doctor's prescription is a gift to be thankful for. The problem is not the drug. It is the gaze that sends us looking for it. That Gen Z put appearance ahead of health may show how long this generation has lived under the eyes of others.
In 1923, Machen described what Christianity gives a person:
Christianity gives a person "a refuge from all the tides of opinion of people who are tossed to and fro." (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 153, my translation)
What God said to Samuel says the same:
"For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7, WEB)
"I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:14, WEB)
Caring for the body is part of our duty as stewards. But hating our bodies and whittling them down can become a way of finding fault with the work of the One who made us. The mirror does not decide our worth.
Today's Question: When I look at my body, whose eyes am I using? The eyes of the people on my screen, or the eyes of the One who made me?
Window Four. 1,100 Trillion Won Gone in a Month
The Facts
- According to data from the Korea Exchange and FnGuide, the combined market value of listed companies in Korea's ten largest business groups fell from 4,472 trillion won at the end of last month to 3,371 trillion won on the 23rd, a drop of about 1,101 trillion won.
- Over the same period, the KOSPI fell 18.8%.
- Analysts attribute the slump in semiconductor stocks to doubts about whether massive AI investment will turn into real profits, combined with selling by foreign investors.
What the World Says
A month ago the market was giddy, saying "AI will change everything." Now it frets, "Was AI a bubble?" About the same technology, hope and fear traded places within a single month. In the meantime, the hearts of many families who had entrusted their savings to stocks must have been tossed up and down as well.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Companies earning profits and people saving and investing belong, in themselves, to a good order. But this sharp drop asks what we have staked our hearts on. When the numbers rise, we mistake them for our own worth. When they fall, we feel as if we ourselves have shrunk.
About a hundred years ago, looking at an age overflowing with material achievement, Machen asked:
"Have we not, in gaining the whole world, lost our own soul?" (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 15, my translation)
That question came from the words of our Lord:
"For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?" (Matthew 16:26, WEB)
1,100 trillion won is an enormous amount of money. Yet it cannot be traded for one person's life. If you have a neighbor lying awake staring at their account, what they need more than a market forecast is someone who will tell them, "Your worth is not that number."
Today's Question: When stock prices fell this week, did my heart fall with them? What is my peace tied to?
Window Five. A Way Opening for a City That Survived on Weeds
The Facts
- On the 23rd (local time), the White House announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a local ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine. The purpose is to let relief supplies in and to prepare the evacuation of residents through a safe corridor. The White House said First Lady Melania Trump had mediated.
- The city had 24,000 residents before the war. About 2,000 remain now, most of them elderly. Cut off from food, water, and electricity, some residents have gotten by on weeds.
- Pope Leo XIV had also earlier called for a ceasefire for the sake of relief to the city. News outlets differ on when the ceasefire begins, reporting either the 27th or the 29th of this month.
What the World Says
The world reads this news as a question of "Who gets credit for the mediation?" War news is always about land, front lines, and negotiations. The elderly left behind in between are hard to see, like dots on a map. They are the people who stayed because they had no strength to leave.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
In his Stone Lectures at Princeton in 1908–1909, Bavinck described the person who lives in sin this way:
"He is lost to his neighbor as well. He abandons his neighbor in need and, in the struggle to survive, sacrifices him for his own gain." (Herman Bavinck, The Philosophy of Revelation, 1909, p. 257, my translation)
War shows this truth in its sharpest form. In the reckoning of the powerful, the old and the young always come last. And yet, if the guns on both sides fall silent even briefly because of those very people, we can call it a small light shining in the darkness. What matters more than who gets the credit is whether those elderly people get clean water to drink.
"Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40, WEB)
The Lord stands before us in the face of one nameless old person left behind on a battlefield. Praying that the ceasefire is kept as promised and that aid reaches them all the way is a kind of service that even we, far away, can offer.
Today's Question: Have I been watching this war only as news? Tonight, will you pray once for the nameless faces of the elderly who remain in Oleshky?
Closing: The One Who Came to Find One Person
Let me lay the five scenes on top of one another.
There was a person who remembered a face in a missing person alert. There were students who moved on in search of a higher place, and young people weighing injections in front of the mirror. There was a market where 1,100 trillion won vanished in a month, and elderly people who survived on weeds until, at last, they could wait for relief.
The world's scale weighs people by scores, body shape, and stock prices. On that scale we always come up short, and we are always anxious. But today is the Lord's Day. Today we stand before the One who uses a different scale.
"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10, WEB)
When Christ saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36, WEB). He did not call us in order of our grades. He did not call us by our weight or by our bank balance either. He came to find the one who was lost, and for that one person He paid with His own life on the cross. My worth has already been set at that cross.
This week, I encourage you to carry these three things with you.
- When a missing person alert arrives, look at the face once before you dismiss it, and pray a short prayer.
- With family members or younger colleagues, ask "Whom do you want to help?" before you ask "What's your rank?"
- If you have a neighbor whose heart has been crushed by stock prices or by the mirror, call them today and tell them, "You are worth more than that number."
What is one person worth? That worth is set by the love of the One who came looking for us. I hope that we who have received that love will go looking for one more person this week.
