A pastor reads five news stories through a Christian worldview: AI exam cheating, Meta's record fine, the wage gap, conscience at work, and organ donation.

(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 165쪽, 필자 번역)

(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 112쪽, 필자 번역)

Is It Foolish to Lose Out? A Christian View of Today's News

Over yesterday and today I gathered and read 770 articles from nine news outlets in Korea and abroad. From them I have chosen five scenes to look at together with the mind of Christ.

Today's Thread: Is It Foolish to Live a Life That Loses Out?

When I lay today's headlines side by side, one question rises to the surface: "Is it foolish to live a life that loses out?"

In exam halls, people were caught trying to receive the answers through their glasses. An American court ordered a giant company that had been telling its users things that were not true to pay the largest penalty in that company's history. In government statistics, the gap that hard work alone cannot close hit a record high once again. An AI researcher left Google's AI lab to keep a clear conscience. And a nineteen-year-old young man in Busan gave parts of his own body to seven people as he departed this life.

The world teaches us to avoid loss. It says that if you don't get caught, you gain; if you are honest, you lose; and if you give, you are left with less. Today's five scenes are windows that make us ask again whether that arithmetic is really right.

Window One. An Exam Hall Where the Answers Appear Behind Your Glasses

The Facts

  • This year, of the 40 cases of cheating caught on national qualification exams run by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, 5 involved AI smart glasses. The agency has asked for criminal investigations and is pushing to revise the relevant laws.
  • A man in his twenties who sat the Engineer Information Processing certification exam wearing AI glasses was referred to prosecutors, without detention, on charges of obstruction of business and violating the National Technical Qualifications Act (on the 22nd).
  • The same kind of cheating has been caught again and again in university early-admission essay exams. Ahead of the College Scholastic Ability Test (Korea's national college entrance exam) on the 19th of next month, proctors have been instructed to have any test-taker who raises suspicion place their glasses on the desk for inspection. Critics point out that with no dedicated detection equipment, everything depends on the proctors' eyes.

What the World Says

The world sees this as a cat-and-mouse game between technology and enforcement. Bring in detectors, set up screening stations, and the problem is solved. Underneath lies this thought: if you get caught, you lose; if you don't, you win.

What the Gospel Helps Us See

Smart glasses are a good tool that helps people see and gives them access to information. They are something made possible by the talents God has given human beings. The problem is not the glasses but where the heart of the person wearing them is pointed. An exam is the place where we confirm whether someone can truly do the work. It is where we decide whom we can trust with our electrical systems and our information systems. To cheat there is to deceive the neighbors who will trust that certificate and hand over their work.

A hundred years ago Machen wrote:

"Honesty, in whatever we say and whatever we do, is not a trifle but one of the weightier matters of the law. Honesty certainly has a value of its own, and that value has nothing whatever to do with consequences." (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 165, author's rendering)

Honesty is precious not because it keeps us from getting caught, and not because it spares us loss. It is precious because it is right in itself before God. The proctor's eyes may miss something, but God's eyes miss nothing.

"He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out." (Proverbs 10:9, WEB)

So honesty in the exam hall must be learned at home before any detector is installed. Whether parents teach "Just don't get caught" or "Live with a clear face before God" shapes the heart a child will carry into the exam hall.

Today's Question: Who am I when no one is watching? What is my child learning at home about what counts as "gain"?

Window Two. A 33-Trillion-Won Price on Lies

The Facts

  • On the 21st (local time), a judge in the U.S. state of New Mexico ordered Meta (the company that runs Facebook) to pay 25 billion dollars (about 33 trillion won). It is the largest penalty Meta has ever received.
  • The lawsuit began with the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Earlier, a jury had found that 26 of 29 statements the company and its executives made about matters such as user data misled consumers.
  • The judge wrote that the wrongdoing reached "the heart of Facebook's core business practices." The amount calculated under state law was 219 billion dollars, but the judge reduced it to 25 billion. The case is expected to be fought again on appeal.

What the World Says

The world looks at this number and reaches for a calculator. Given its quarterly profits, the company can absorb it, people say; it will shrink on appeal. The calculation is that a lie is, in the end, just another cost. If the profit is bigger than the fine, it was a good deal.

What the Gospel Helps Us See

Technology that has connected billions of people to one another is a remarkable gift. Families far apart see each other's faces; lost friends are found again. But that connection must rest on trust. Where my information goes, and whether the company I trusted with it tells the truth: that is the trust.

Machen spoke firmly about the temptation to cover a falsehood with a good purpose:

"Christian ethics do not abolish ordinary honesty. No desire to build up the church or to avoid giving offense can excuse a lie." (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 112, author's rendering)

Machen was aiming at words spoken within the church, but the principle applies just as much to a company. Even a grand mission like "connecting the world" cannot justify falsehood. What is hidden for a long time is eventually brought to light. This ruling shows it.

"But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known." (Luke 12:2, WEB)

Yet this word was not given so that we could point fingers at others. Before we click our tongues at a company's lies, we should ask whether we, too, have been shaving the truth little by little after weighing our profit and loss. Even a big company's lie probably began with one small word.

Today's Question: What small lie have I let slide, thinking "this much is fine"? Was what I gained from it really a gain?

Window Three. A Gap That Hard Work Cannot Close

The Facts

  • According to figures released on the 21st by Korea's national statistics agency, non-regular (temporary and contract) workers numbered 8,671,000 in August this year, 38.5% of all wage earners. That is both the highest number and the highest share since records began in 2003.
  • The number of non-regular workers rose by 103,000 in one year.
  • From June to August this year, non-regular workers earned an average of about 2.11 million won a month, and the gap with regular employees widened to 1.94 million won, the largest ever.

What the World Says

Faced with these numbers, one side says, "They didn't try hard enough," and the other says, "The system is the problem." And many people quietly reach a conclusion: living faithfully and working hard is not enough.

What the Gospel Helps Us See

Work is a gift God has given to human beings. The 8.67 million people in non-regular jobs also cook someone's meals, care for the sick in hospital beds, and keep factories running. Their work is no less valuable. But if people who shed the same sweat stand in such different places when it comes to preparing for old age or paying hospital bills, that cannot be explained by individual laziness alone. The systems people have built may be woven crookedly.

Poythress says this about what poor neighbors need:

"What the poor rightly deserve is not pity or favoritism, but justice." (Vern S. Poythress, Redeeming Sociology, 2011, p. 222, author's rendering)

It is not this article's place to decide which party's solution is right. But Christians should not stop at feeling sorry; we should long for and seek an order in which people are treated fairly for the work they do. And to those who work faithfully we can say this: your labor is never in vain.

"And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23–24, WEB)

Faithfulness that the world's ledger never counts is written down, without omission, in the Lord's ledger. That is the comfort those who work faithfully can hold on to.

Today's Question: In my workplace and my church, who does the same work as others but is treated differently? Do I know that person's name?

Window Four. A Man Who Laid Down His Job to Keep His Conscience

The Facts

  • A research engineer who had worked for about three years at Google DeepMind, Google's AI research organization, left the company this month. The reason was Google's AI contracts with the U.S. and Israeli militaries.
  • This year Google signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense allowing its AI to be used for classified military work.
  • Google said it reviews public-sector contracts through a consistent process and has channels in place for employees to raise concerns.

What the World Says

The world is divided over someone like this. Some call him a naive idealist; others call him a brave whistleblower. Either way, the conclusion is the same: giving up a good salary and a career is a loss.

What the Gospel Helps Us See

There is something to discern first. Christians themselves disagree about how to view the use of technology in defending a nation. Scripture itself recognizes that the state bears the sword (Romans 13:4, WEB). So this is not a matter of simply applauding everything this researcher decided. But one thing is clear: he believed that conscience must stay alive even at work, and he paid a price for that belief.

Kuyper described a defining mark of Calvinist faith this way:

Calvinism "placed the believer before the face of God, not only in the church, but also in personal life, in the family, and in social and political life." (Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: Six Stone-lectures, 1899, p. 86, author's rendering)

We do not stand before God only on Sundays. In the Monday morning meeting room, and at the desk where we sign contracts, we are standing before the face of God. Those who know this do not hide behind "The company told me to" or "Everyone does it."

"Herein I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men." (Acts 24:16, WEB)

I am not saying every Christian must leave their company. Most will need to stay where they are and give voice to their conscience there. Whether you leave or stay, what matters is knowing who has the final sign-off on your work.

Today's Question: Is there anything in my work that troubles my conscience? Do I have someone with whom I can lay it before God and pray?

Window Five. The Last Gift of a Nineteen-Year-Old Who Dreamed of Being a Chef

The Facts

  • Kang Min-su (19), born in Busan as the younger of a son and a daughter, entered a culinary high school dreaming of becoming a chef, and often cooked meals and baked bread for his family.
  • After being declared brain-dead on the 30th of last month at Myongji Hospital in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, he donated his heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, both kidneys and corneas, giving new life to seven people (announced by the Korea Organ Donation Agency on the 22nd).
  • His parents decided on donation as they remembered how their son could never simply walk past someone in need.

What the World Says

The world reads stories like this in two parts, "a tragic death" and "a beautiful donation," and soon moves on to the next article. And inwardly it thinks: if you leave this early, haven't you lost everything?

What the Gospel Helps Us See

His father said, "It is a great comfort to think that Min-su's heart is beating strongly in someone's body." Before words like these, we should bow our heads before we rush to interpret. No explanation can fully lift this family's grief. Christ himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35, WEB).

And yet this scene shows what the world's arithmetic misses. One person's body became life for seven. The heart of a son who could never walk past someone in need became, at the very end, the greatest act of sharing.

"Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit." (John 12:24, WEB)

This word is first of all about Christ himself. He became the grain of wheat that fell into the earth, and so we live. One young man's donation is a mirror that reflects, however dimly, that great love. And the risen Lord gives the family left behind the hope that this parting is not the end.

Today's Question: What can I give for someone today? My time, a bowl of food, or a decision like registering as an organ donor?

Closing: The One Who Suffered the Greatest Loss

Let me lay the five scenes on top of one another once more.

There were people receiving answers through their glasses so as not to get caught, and a company that for years told its users things that were not true. There were 8.67 million neighbors standing before a gap that hard work cannot close, and a researcher who laid down a good position for the sake of conscience. And there was a nineteen-year-old who gave himself away to seven people as he departed.

By the world's ledger, the first two pursued gain and the last three suffered loss. But is that really so? Gain won by falsehood is eventually exposed, and loss honestly borne never disappears before God.

There is One who suffered the greatest loss in history.

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:9, WEB)

The One who possessed the glory of heaven became poor, and the One without sin stood in the place of sinners. The world called that cross the most foolish loss of all. But that loss saved us, and on the third day the tomb was empty. That is why the Lord says, "whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it" (Matthew 16:25, WEB).

As you close today's news, I hope you will hold on to this one thing. Is it foolish to live a life that loses out? A life that follows Christ, living honestly, working faithfully and giving itself away, is never a losing life.

"Let's not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up." (Galatians 6:9, WEB)
