· Which Doors Should We Open, and Which Should We Close?

A Christian reading of five news stories, from a rescued shark to a hidden PHP flaw, about the doors we open and close and Christ, the true Door.
(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 67쪽, 필자 번역)
(J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, 111쪽, 필자 번역)

Which Doors Should We Open, and Which Should We Close?
Over yesterday and today I gathered and read 758 articles from nine news outlets in Korea and abroad. I picked five scenes from them, and I invite you to look at them with me through the mind of Christ.
Today's Thread: Which Doors to Open, Which to Close
When I lay today's headlines side by side, one image keeps catching my eye: a door. Some doors are open and some are shut. A door that should have been open stayed shut for a long time, and a door that should have been shut swung open far too easily.
In Busan, a shark trapped in a canal made it out to sea after thirty-three days, and people put up barriers behind it. On the internet, a back door that nobody had noticed for more than ten years was found, and the whole world hurried to lock it. In the stock market, a door to getting rich quick opened, and a great many individual investors lost large sums inside it. In Russia, a prison door opened for a seventy-four-year-old American, and a Seoul court ordered the state to compensate people who were locked away in institutions as children half a century ago.
Which doors should we open, and which should we close? This is not a question only for nations and markets. Our hearts have the same doors. Let us open the five scenes one at a time.
Window One: The Shark That Reached the Sea After Thirty-Three Days
The Facts
- On the 18th of last month, a shark was first spotted in an artificial canal at the Busan North Port waterfront park. It is a female dusky shark about 3 meters long, an endangered species. Local residents named her "Bukangi."
- More than 1.6 million people came to the waterfront park to see Bukangi. During that time she also picked up a wound on her snout.
- On the 21st, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the city of Busan and other agencies made a third attempt to guide her out with nets, and Bukangi swam out of the canal into the open sea, 33 days after she was first found. The authorities then put up several layers of barriers so she could not swim back in.
- People gathered along the canal clapped and cheered her on, wishing her a long, healthy life in the wide sea.
What the World Says
The world called Bukangi a "local attraction." Nearby shops got busy, souvenirs appeared, and the city became famous. We are used to measuring living things by what they are worth to look at and what use they are to us. When a creature is lovable, we want it to stay; when it is dangerous, we want it gone. Either way, the measure is "me."
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Bukangi's story ends well because in the end people chose "where the shark can live" over "what we want to see." They opened the door to the sea, and then they closed the door so she would not wander back into the narrow canal. That is a love that does not hold on.
In his 1898 lectures at Princeton, Abraham Kuyper said that the created world exists for God.
"Therefore God has engraved religious expression even on all of unconscious nature: on plants, on animals, and on little children." (Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: Six Stone-lectures, 1899, p. 52, paraphrased)
Even a single shark is, before it is a spectacle for people, a creature that shows forth its Creator. We are not its owners. We are its caretakers.
"Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches. There is the sea, great and wide, in which are innumerable living things, both small and large animals." (Psalm 104:24–25, WEB)
Today's Question: For someone or something you cherish, what would it look like to love them by sending them to a place that is good for them, rather than keeping them close to you?
Window Two: A Back Door Left Open for More Than Ten Years
The Facts
- Two critical security flaws were found in PHP, the programming language used by about 70% of the world's websites. They allow a hacker to take over a server without logging in. The developers released an emergency patch on the 21st (local time).
- No one had found these flaws for more than ten years. Security firms using artificial intelligence (AI) finally discovered them.
- The Finnish government, Dutch agencies, and parts of Wikipedia took their websites offline as a precaution.
- Experts also warned that the same AI capability that found the flaws could help attackers build attack tools faster.
What the World Says
The world reads this as a victory for technology, and also as a threat from technology. Amazement that "AI found the hole" spreads alongside fear that "AI is helping hackers." Yet both views keep the problem inside the machine. They share the belief that a smarter tool will solve it.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
What makes these flaws frightening is not that they were big or loud, but that they were quiet. Deep inside code used every day, they made no sound for more than a decade. In 1923, J. Gresham Machen used a picture like this for the battle in our souls.
"In the moral battle, as on the battlefield, the quiet sectors are usually the most dangerous. Satan enters our lives through 'little sins.'" (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 67, paraphrased)
The technology that found the computer's back door is a gift to be thankful for. It is common grace. But no technology can find the back doors of the human heart. Habits so familiar that they no longer look like sin, words and thoughts we excused because no one would ever know: these are such doors. They come to light only when God's Word and the Holy Spirit shine on them.
"Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors." (Psalm 19:12, WEB)
Still, there is reason to be glad. The day a hole is exposed is the day it can be fixed. When our hidden faults come to light we may feel ashamed, but that day is also a day of grace.
Today's Question: Where in your life is a "back door" that has been quiet for so long that you have stopped checking it?
Window Three: Standing at the Door to Getting Rich Quick
The Facts
- Single-stock leveraged and inverse products that track about twice the daily movement of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares were launched for the first time on May 27.
- From the launch through August 14, realized trading losses by individual investors through ten brokerages alone came to 2.3242 trillion won.
- The governor of the Financial Supervisory Service has publicly expressed regret that the introduction of these products was not stopped.
What the World Says
The world argues over who is to blame: those who rushed the rules through, those who failed to warn of the risks, and then there is the old line, "Investors are responsible for their own choices." Responsibility must certainly be sorted out. But underneath it all runs an older whisper: if you don't double your money faster than everyone else, you'll fall behind.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
I am not trying to blame those who lost money. Facing housing prices and the cost of living, how many of us have never felt the panic of "I can't go on like this"? That restlessness belongs to all of us. Machen pointed out that the word "god" is sometimes used for whatever a person wants most, and he wrote:
"Of some people it may be said that their god is mammon, the thing for which they labor and to which their hearts are bound." (J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism, 1923, p. 111, paraphrased)
Money itself is a good tool that God gives. But when the heart is bound to it, money becomes the master. The Bible does not condemn earning money, but it does warn against haste.
"A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished." (Proverbs 28:20, WEB)
The church has two things to do here. First, to sit beside neighbors who cannot sleep because of their losses, without condemning them. Second, to teach our children not "fast and double" but "faithful and for the long haul."
Today's Question: What is your heart calculating most often these days? If that is your treasure, where is your heart right now?
Window Four: A Prison Door Opens for a Seventy-Four-Year-Old
The Facts
- On the 21st (local time), Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired teacher from Michigan.
- He was captured by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine in 2022, and in 2024 a Russian court convicted him on charges of fighting for Ukraine.
- His release was announced at a meeting between a U.S. envoy and President Putin. In weakened health, he set out for home to the United States, where his family was waiting.
What the World Says
The world reads this release as a diplomatic balance sheet: who gained what, who won the negotiation. Meanwhile, one old man's more than four years in prison disappear behind the numbers. It is common for big stories to swallow small people.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
We cannot know all the calculations of politics. But a prison door opening and a man going home to his family is, in itself, something to rejoice over. When Christ began His public ministry, He proclaimed:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed" (Luke 4:18, WEB)
The door Christ opens is not opened as the price of a deal. He gave His own body as the price for us. And there are still people whose doors have not opened: people trapped in war, people held captive without a name. Scripture tells us not to forget them.
"Remember those who are in bonds, as bound with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you are also in the body." (Hebrews 13:3, WEB)
Today's Question: Could you pray today, by name, for "one person" hidden behind the big stories in the news?
Window Five: A Late Verdict for Children Who Were Locked Away
The Facts
- The Seoul Central District Court ordered the state, the city of Mokpo and others to pay a total of 1.752 billion won in compensation to six survivors who, under a past government policy of rounding up "vagrant children," were forcibly confined in places such as Dongmyeongwon in Mokpo and the Seoul Municipal Children's Protection Center.
- The court set compensation for emotional suffering at 80 million won per year of confinement.
- Dongmyeongwon was licensed as a facility for vagrant children in 1972, and children handed over in police and government crackdowns were confined there. In April of last year, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Korea officially confirmed the human rights abuses that took place there.
- The court found that the local government, which supervised the facility, could well have discovered and corrected the abuses.
What the World Says
It is easy to say, "That's all in the past," or "Everyone had it hard back then." Or our eyes go only to the size of the payout. But money cannot give back a childhood. The gaze that saw children as "a problem to be cleared away" in the name of clean streets was what locked that door.
What the Gospel Helps Us See
Late as it is, this ruling has said publicly that the door was wrongly locked. That is why it matters. Abraham Kuyper said that however great the power of the state, there is a higher court above it.
"However strongly the state may assert itself and suppress the free development of the individual, above that mighty state there always shines before the eyes of our soul the majesty of the King of kings, who is infinitely mightier still. His righteous court always preserves for every oppressed person the right of appeal." (Abraham Kuyper, Calvinism: Six Stone-lectures, 1899, p. 115, paraphrased)
The cries of those wronged children did not fall to the ground unheard. God remembers them.
"A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing" (Psalm 68:5–6, WEB)
So which door should the church open? Even today there are children living outside a home, and young people who must leave care facilities and stand on their own. My hope is that the church's door, and the door to our own dinner tables, will be open to them.
Today's Question: Who are the people our community has seen only as "a problem" and shut the door on?
Closing: The One Who Is the True Door
Let me lay the five scenes over one another once more.
For a shark trapped in a narrow canal, the door to the sea opened. The internet's back door, open for more than ten years, was hurriedly shut. The door to getting rich quick opened far too easily, and many neighbors lost inside it. A prison door opened for an old man, and the doors locked on children half a century ago were opened again by a court ruling.
We are always standing before doors. We live with the doors we should open kept shut, and the doors we should shut left open. Some doors we cannot open by our own strength, and some we do not even know are there. Yet there is One who appeared in none of today's headlines, and He stands before every door.
"I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture." (John 10:9, WEB)
Christ shines His light on the doors of our hidden faults so that we can close them. He opens the doors of the captives. And He looks on us, wandering like sheep without a shepherd, with compassion (Matthew 9:36). The thief comes to steal, but He came so that the sheep may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10).
As you close today's news, I hope you will look at just one door, or rather one pair of them: one back door in your heart to close today, and one door to open toward a neighbor today. The One who is the true Door walks those steps with you.
