A pastor reflects on a Korean film about a widow and asks how Christians can comfort the grieving without rushing their sorrow, and grieve with hope.

(The Mark of the Christian, 1970).

Grief After Losing a Spouse: What Do We Say to Those Left Alone?

A woman has cleared out the house she lived in all her life and moved into an apartment. Her husband went before her. All she has left is the piano he used to play and the car they used to drive together. Quietly, she prepares for a "journey" of her own. This is the story of the film The Flowing Journey (흐르는 여정), which opened yesterday (October 28).

When I read the film's synopsis, my first thought was, "It's time for her to stop grieving and pull herself together." Then I stopped short. I have said those same words many times at funerals. I set that thought aside and read it again. Only then did I see a woman sitting alone at a piano.

① Facts: What happened

The Flowing Journey is an independent film by director Kim Jin-yu, released in theaters on October 28. Actress Kim Hye-ok plays Chun-hee, a woman whose husband has died before her. In her new apartment building, Chun-hee meets some unexpected neighbors: a young man (Justin Min) who was adopted to Germany, became a conductor, and has come to Korea to find his birth mother, and a boy (Park Dae-ho) who dreams of becoming a pianist (The Fact 10.16, TV Report 10.20).

The Dong-A Ilbo ran its review under the headline "A Journey Toward Death" (10.28). At a press screening, the director also said he thought of Chun-hee's journey as a road toward meeting her husband again (The Fact 10.16). The reports did not say how the film ends. I have not seen the film yet, so I will not talk about the ending.

② Sphere: Whose concern is this?

This film belongs to the sphere of art. But the place it shines its light on is the family, or more precisely, the empty space left after a family has been broken by loss. What stands out is that the people who fill that empty space are neighbors, not relatives. We cannot leave the care of people who are left alone to government programs alone. Neighbors and the church have their own part to play.

③ Gift: What is good?

Let me start with what is good. This film does not rush to fix grief. It stays beside the grieving person and lets her grieve as fully as she needs to.

Scripture does the same. Standing at Lazarus's tomb, the Lord knew He was about to raise him. Yet He wept first. "Jesus wept" (John 11:35, WEB). And He tells us too: "Weep with those who weep" (Romans 12:15, WEB). The heart that goes on missing a loved one to the very end is a gift from God, because it shows how deeply that person was loved.

④ Distortion: What has been twisted?

So what has been twisted? Before looking at the film, I want to look at us, the people watching it.

In The God Who Is There (거기 계시는 하나님, 1968), Francis Schaeffer observed that every person lives with a tension between what they believe and the world as it really is. To avoid seeing that tension, he said, people build a "roof" over their heads. Death is where that roof is thickest. We don't talk about death. We finish funerals quickly. We tell grieving people, "You'll be okay soon."

In How Should We Then Live? (그러면 우리는 어떻게 살 것인가, 1976), Schaeffer also said that a society which has lost its absolute standard is left with only personal peace and affluence. Seen through that lens, it becomes clear why we hurry other people's grief: their sorrow disturbs our own peace. So we say "Cheer up" or "Life goes on for the living," and pull the roof over them. Under those words, the one left behind becomes even lonelier. At the end of that loneliness, some even begin to think, "I want to follow them."

They are not to be blamed. When the Lord saw the crowds, "he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36, WEB). That is how the Lord sees the one who lies awake alone through the night. And I was among those who left that side too quickly.

⑤ Restoration: Where does the light of Christ shine?

In The Mark of the Christian (그리스도인의 표지, 1970), Schaeffer said that the mark by which the world comes to believe the gospel is visible love among Christians. "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35, WEB). If in the film it was neighbors who stayed by Chun-hee's side, the church can be that kind of neighbor too.

Here are a few things you might try this week.

  • If someone near you has been left alone: Instead of "Stay strong," ask, "You miss them, don't you?" Say the name of the one who has died. They may long to hear that name again. Visit after everyone else has gone: one month after the funeral, three months after, on the first anniversary of the death. A meal together or a single phone call is enough.
  • If you are the one who has been left alone: Grief that lasts a long time is not a sign of weak faith. But if the thought "I want to follow them" keeps coming back, do not carry it by yourself. In Korea, the suicide prevention hotline 109 is open 24 hours, and your privacy is protected. You can also tell your pastor or one trusted church member about these feelings today.

Finally, let us look to our Lord. He is the One who wept at Lazarus's tomb, and in that same place He said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies" (John 11:25, WEB). That is why Paul did not tell us not to grieve. He wrote, "so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13, WEB). We grieve. But we grieve with hope. "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart" (Psalm 34:18, WEB). The light of Christ, who wept at the tomb and conquered the tomb, shines today on you too, sitting alone at the piano (Ephesians 5:14).

A Question to Practice

The next time you are searching for words in front of someone who is grieving, ask yourself: are these words for them, or are they to make me feel more comfortable?

Further Reading

Francis Schaeffer, The Mark of the Christian (1970). It is a slim book about how the way we love one another becomes the window through which the world sees the gospel. It is a good book to read and discuss together when asking what the church can do alongside a grieving member.
