Why You Need This

It's Wednesday night, and you're standing at the church's video equipment, not sure which port the cable goes into. The manual's print is tiny, and the person who could help has gone home. In a moment like that, you can pick up your phone, point it at the ports, and just ask, "Where do I plug this cable in?" Live is especially handy for people who find typing hard. You can also use it as a practice partner, saying a wedding emcee script or a church announcement out loud. Google's own help pages describe the same uses for Live: having a back-and-forth conversation, brainstorming out loud, and practicing out loud.

Check This First

Gemini Live works only in the Gemini mobile app on Android phones and tablets and on iPhone and iPad. You can't use it at gemini.google.com on a computer. You must be 13 or older and signed in. Before you start, install the Gemini app on your phone and sign in with your Google account.

Follow Along

Starting Live

1. Open the Gemini app on your phone.
2. Tap Live at the bottom, or swipe the screen to the left. If it's your first time, follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Talk the way you normally do. You can even cut in while it's answering and say, "Shorter."

Showing Things with the Camera

1. On the Live screen, tap Camera. To switch to the back camera, tap Switch to back or front camera.

Pausing and Ending

1. To turn off just the microphone, tap Hold. To pick up again, tap Live.
2. To block only your own voice while still hearing Gemini, tap Mute.
3. When you're done, tap End. Your conversation is saved as text (a transcript) that you can read again later. If you open the same chat and tap Live, you can keep talking where you left off.

On Android, tap Turn on captions in the top right of the Live screen and the answers will also show up as text. I'd recommend this for anyone who is hard of hearing.

Where People Often Get Stuck

There's no Live button on my computer. That's normal. Live is only in the mobile app.

I can't call up the Gem I made in Lesson 8 inside Live. Google's help pages say that Gems can't currently be used in Gemini Live.

I left the app, came back, and the camera was off. If you leave the app or your screen locks, the camera turns off by itself, and it doesn't come back on when you return. Just tap Camera again.

If activity saving is turned on, your Live transcripts, audio, and any video you shared are saved to your Gemini Apps Activity. So I don't turn on Live during pastoral visits or counseling sessions. Google also advises asking permission first whenever another person's voice might be recorded or you bring them into the conversation.
