Gambling Addiction Recovery and Family: What Christians Should Ask

A Korean gambling recovery camp for families raises questions of luck, shame and faith. A pastor offers three steps for families coping alone.
(The Mark of the Christian, 1970).

Gambling Addiction Recovery and Family: What Christians Should Ask
About thirty people have gathered at a lodge in the mountains near Yeongwol, in Gangwon Province. They walk forest trails together, listen to music, and learn to cook in the same kitchen. Some of them are trying to get free from gambling. The others are the family members who have stayed beside them. The camp started yesterday and ends tomorrow.
To be honest, when I read this news, the first words that came up in me were these: "Wasn't it their own choice in the end?" I laid that thought down before the Lord and read the story again. This time I saw a wife who has been answering the debt collectors' calls for her husband. I saw a child who has never once been able to tell a friend about their father. I am writing this with one family member in mind, someone who is holding on alone in that place right now.
① The Facts: What Happened
Starting October 23, Kangwon Land is holding its "4th Residential Healing Camp," a three-day, two-night program at the High Healing Center in Yeongwol. It is hosted by Kangwon Land's Maeumchaeum Center (the name means "filling the heart") and the Forest Healing Foundation, with the Korea Center on Gambling Problems taking part. About thirty people, people recovering from gambling overinvolvement and their families, are taking part (Yonhap News, Kangwon Domin Ilbo, Mega Economy, Oct. 23).
One thing is different this time. The first camp, in March this year, had 20 people in recovery (Korea Economic Daily, Mar. 27). This time the program was opened to their families as well. The days are filled with group counseling, conversations between family members, yoga and meditation, forest therapy, and cooking classes. The center's director explained that when families take part together, the desire to recover grows stronger and the results improve. Kangwon Land says it plans to be officially designated as a specialized treatment facility in 2027 and to expand this approach nationwide.
Some things are still unknown. No results from the camp have been reported yet, and the 2027 plan is still only a plan.
② The Sphere: Whose Matter Is This?
A public institution organized the camp, but the heart of this matter is the home. Gambling starts in one person's wallet and ends up shaking the whole family's dinner table. That is why recovery doesn't stop at one person either.
This is also the church's matter. Someone sitting in our own pews may be carrying debt and shame they have never told anyone about.
③ The Gift: What Is Good Here?
Inviting families into the place of recovery together is a good thing. God did not make people to stand alone. Forests, music, and a shared table are gifts from God too. In front of gifts like these, a hardened heart sometimes softens.
Let me go a little deeper. Because Francis Schaeffer saw people as bearing the image of God, he looked first for the real longing beneath twisted behavior. There is a longing beneath gambling too: the wish to be free of a heavy burden all at once, and the wish to achieve something and be recognized for it. That longing in itself is not evil.
④ The Distortion: What Has Been Twisted?
In How Should We Then Live? (그러면 우리는 어떻게 살 것인가), Schaeffer argued that people's actions flow from the thoughts that lie beneath them. So what thoughts lie beneath gambling? The belief that "luck decides my life in the end" and that "one big win will change everything."
In his 1898 lectures, Abraham Kuyper explained why Calvinists were wary of games of chance like card-playing. Such games, he said, nurture "a dangerous tendency in our hearts to turn our eyes away from God and to rely on luck or chance" (Calvinism (칼빈주의), 1899, p. 93, my rendering). He held that fearing God and seeking the favor of luck can no more go together than water and fire (same page). Gambling puts "luck" in God's place.
In The God Who Is There (거기 계시는 하나님), Schaeffer said that people put up a "roof" to cover the tension between what they believe and how they actually live. For the person who gambles, the roof is words like "just this once" and "I'll pay it back soon." But families put up roofs too: "Our family is fine." They hide it to save face, and out of fear of how the church will see them. Under that roof, the wounds go deeper. So we need to remember our Lord's heart when he looked at the crowds: "But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36, WEB).
There is one more thing we need to look at honestly. The organization that started this healing program is the one that runs a casino. A structure that causes wounds and the work of binding up those wounds live under the same roof, and that leaves us with a question. Even so, I don't want to belittle the hard work of the people who are helping others in that place right now.
⑤ Restoration: Where Does the Light of Christ Shine?
In the story of the prodigal son that Jesus told, the father recognizes his son from far off as he comes home. "But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him" (Luke 15:20, WEB). The father didn't wait to embrace his son until he had paid everything back and fixed everything. He ran to him first, while the son was still on the road home.
In The Mark of the Christian (그리스도인의 표지), Schaeffer said that the mark by which the world recognizes Christ is visible love among Christians. The Lord himself said, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35, WEB). The love the church can show to a family broken by gambling is not judgment. It is a burden carried together. "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2, WEB).
To the family member who is holding on alone right now, here are three small steps you can take today.
- Don't hide it alone. The Korea Center on Gambling Problems helpline is 1336, with no area code needed. It is free and answers 365 days a year, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Family members can get counseling too, not only the person who gambles. If a phone call is hard, you can also reach them by chat, text message, or KakaoTalk.
- Don't try to solve the money problem alone. The center says it helps with family problems and even with financial and legal problems. Before you take on the debt yourself, get counseling first.
- Tell one person you can trust. A pastor, or one church member who has prayed with you for a long time, is enough. If you are the one listening, keep the secret, and offer a meal and a prayer before any lecture.
Luck will not protect us. But the Lord has promised: "I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5, WEB). Recovery is not a road you walk alone. Christ, who runs out first from far off, is on that road. He gives us family and the church so that we can walk it together.
A Question to Practice
The next time you hear the words "if only it works out this once" inside yourself, ask: Am I relying on God right now, or on luck?
Further Reading
Francis Schaeffer, The Mark of the Christian (1970). It is a very short book. It asks how people who hold to the truth must love one another so that the world can see Christ. It is a good book for a church with hurting families to read and discuss together.
